Criminal Minds and Hoarding.

Merlene was a young model who lived in Topanga, California. Life was good for Merlene, especially when she met the thought to be love of her life, David. David and Merlene were the story book couple that fell in love as soon as they saw each other. After only a few weeks of dating, David proposed marriage to Merlene. She said yes. Later in their marriage, the so in love couple had their daughter, Celeste. Their new baby girl meant the world to the couple. Although their bond with their precious baby stayed as tight as ever, David and Merlene's beautiful love story ended in a tragic divorce. After Merlene found out that her hubby was seeing other women while still being married to her, she wouldn't be with this man anymore. Merlene's divorce led her to a bad state of depression. How did Merlene cope with this sadness, you ask? By shopping and collecting that is. She seemed like your typical elder, but she wasn't. Merlene was a horrible hoarder. At age 14 and 15, her daughter Celeste wasn't ever allowed to have friends over because it was so bad. What caused this hoarding obsession? Depression. I noticed that throughout this episode that the show mainly showed Merlene being obsessive over everything in her home, and rarely showed Merlene doing good for the community. Merlene would go out at night and go through trash and separate the trash where it needed to go. Also, she would go and water random plants. Most people see a hoarder as someone who keeps a bunch of everything, but this show shows us that hoarding is much more than that.
Jeff was a guy who had hoarded for quite a while. Jeff had a house (location unknown) in which he severely hoarded in. He went to Chattanooga, Tennessee one day to work on his music when he got a call that his house was on fire. Even after this incident,  Jeff began hoarding again, except in Tennessee. What caused Jeff to hoard? He thought he could fix about everything. On top of that, Jeff struggled with deciding what to throw away and what to keep.  Both of these hoarders have some things in common; They both don’t want to part with ANYTHING, they won’t listen to family members, and they both ended up in therapy. I know what hoarding is like because my papaw did it, and his case is very similar to Merlene and Jeff's. Honestly, TV does show a lot of truth about hoarding.
Looking for a case similar to the case on the Criminal Minds (Criminal Minds; "Unknown Subject", Season 7, episode 12), I came upon famous rapist and killer, Ted Bundy. The killer in this episode is similar to Ted because they both raped and killed several people. The main similarity is that they both would revisit their victims. Ted had sex with the victims dead body, while this killer raped his victims for a second time (alive). Here is an article that supports those facts.
Competition also can play a factor in a crime. Here is an article on how competition can lead to conflict. On Criminal Minds, "The wheels on the bus go", season 8, episode 8, two brothers fight against each other to be the best. It's totally normal to be competitive, but sometimes a little friendly competition can lead to serious harm, even if it isn't intended. There's been plenty of cases where this has happened.
